Chalk paint
Chalk paint stands out for its velvety matt finish with a powdery look that brings character to furniture, woodwork and walls. Water-based, it adheres to a wide range of surfaces, often without heavy sanding. This makes it a favourite with homeowners giving a sideboard or chest of drawers a makeover, as well as with professionals tasked with distressing a kitchen or an entire room. It suits vintage, country and Scandinavian styles, all very popular in Belgian interiors. It also lends itself to decorative effects such as an aged look, sanded edges, layered colours or waxing. To make the right choice, start with the surface. A formula designed for furniture and small objects gives a better patina, while a wall version focuses on opacity and coverage over large areas. On heavily used pieces such as tables, chairs or kitchen doors, plan for a finishing wax or varnish, as chalk paint remains vulnerable to stains and wear. On tannin-rich wood such as oak, or on a glossy varnished surface, test on a hidden area first and apply a suitable primer if needed. Finally, compare colour charts before ordering: chalky shades can vary noticeably depending on the light in the room.
