Ultra-matt finishes are non-reflective: they better hide small surface imperfections and reduce lap marks, which really matters on a large ceiling or a wall exposed to raking light. On new, porous or freshly repaired plasterwork, apply the primer first to even out absorption. On a wall with hairline cracks or filled patches, apply the smoothing filler before any finish coat. For a ceiling or a room flooded with light, go for ultra-matt, which gives off no reflection at all. In a hallway or a child's bedroom that sees more wear, choose a washable matt instead, which stands up better to cleaning.
