Ceiling paint
Ceilings are almost always painted at arm's length, in raking light. The paint therefore needs to cover evenly, minimise lap marks and not drip from the roller. This selection brings together matt ceiling paints, mostly water-based and low-odour. They are suitable for plaster, plasterboard, concrete or old wallpaper that needs repainting. Professionals and DIYers alike will find pack sizes suited to large projects as well as single-room makeovers, with kits designed for smaller spaces. To choose, start with the condition of your ceiling. On a sound, previously painted surface, a high-opacity matt paint with fast drying lets you keep a wet edge and avoid visible joins. On nicotine, water or soot stains, common in older homes, first apply a stain-blocking paint, otherwise the marks will bleed back through the finish. In a poorly ventilated bathroom or kitchen, opt for a more washable finish, or even an alkyd version, rather than a highly porous matt. As for colour, matt white reflects the most light, while a pale shade or a deep black can create a sense of volume, for example to visually lower a high ceiling.
