Paint that won't stick is almost always the result of a poorly prepared surface. The Zinsser Multi-Surface degreaser and cleaner is a concentrated, water-based product. It removes grease, oils and stubborn dirt before painting, so that the primer or topcoat adheres to a clean, sound surface. It is suitable for renovation projects as well as furniture makeovers.
Start by identifying the type of soiling. Simple dust doesn't call for the same treatment as a greasy kitchen cabinet or a waxed surface. The more grease or wax the surface carries, the more decisive the degreasing is before any bonding primer. For dilution and contact time, follow the instructions on the technical data sheet and the label.
Work in sections, using a clean cloth or sponge that you change regularly so as not to redeposit the grease. On heavily used surfaces such as laminate or melamine, pay particular attention to edges, handles and handling areas, where deposits build up the most.
Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the primer or paint. This product can also be used to clean tools and machinery at the end of a job or a day in the workshop.

Degrease before sanding, not just after. On a waxed or greasy piece of furniture, dry sanding drives the grease and wax deep into the fibres of the surface, and this is often where adhesion defects or "fisheyes" originate. A first pass of degreaser, sanding, then a second clean to remove dust gives a noticeably more reliable surface.
Always test on a discreet area, especially on old varnished wood or laminate that is already weakened, and change your cloth as soon as it is loaded. A saturated cloth spreads the dirt around instead of removing it.
