ZINSSER® PEEL STOP

ZINSSER® PEEL STOP is a reinforcing transparent and flexible primer based on vinyl acetate and versatate copolymer, specially formulated to treat surfaces that peel, crack or chalk. This bridging primer infiltrates the micro-cracks remaining after scraping and sanding to 'bond' the edges of old paint layers, creating a solid foundation that prevents future film failures. Its penetrating formula fixes chalky surfaces and bridges cracks, offering a sound surface ready to receive the topcoat.

Technical characteristics

  • Density: 1.05 g/cm³
  • Dry matter: 21.6 % by weight, 19.3 % by volume
  • Touch-dry: 1 hour at 20°C and 50 % relative humidity
  • Recoatable after 2 hours
  • Full cure: 7 to 10 days
  • Theoretical coverage: 7.4 to 9.8 m²/litre
  • Recommended wet film thickness: 83 µm
  • Transparent satin finish
  • Clean tools with soapy water

Application advice

Prepare the surface by scraping and sanding problem areas to remove all loose paint. Even if micro-cracks and openings remain beneath the edges of old coats, PEEL STOP will infiltrate them to form a solid bonding film. Apply the product with brush, roller or spray gun to problem areas, ensuring good penetration into cracks and lifted edges.

The product can be used both indoors and outdoors. Its flexible and breathable formula forms a membrane that allows moisture to escape whilst bridging surface defects. Observe the minimum 2-hour recoating interval before applying your topcoat. Practical coverage will depend on the porosity and roughness of the treated substrate.

On heavily chalked surfaces, PEEL STOP penetrates and fixes powdery residue to create a stable foundation. Its flexible acrylic film prevents crack propagation to the topcoat layer, ensuring the durability of your paint system.

Pro tips

On Belgian renovation projects, particularly in older properties where paint layers have accumulated over decades, PEEL STOP delivers considerable time savings. Rather than fully stripping a chalky or peeling substrate, you stabilise problem areas after thorough scraping. Favour roller application for large wall surfaces and a spatula brush for woodwork. On exterior surfaces exposed to weather, ensure the substrate is completely dry before application. For optimal results, work at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Remember that full cure takes up to 10 days: inform your client that maximum strength will only be achieved after this maturation period.

FAQ

Can I apply PEEL STOP directly over flaking paint?

No, you must scrape and sand first to remove all loose particles. PEEL STOP then acts to re-adhere remaining edges and fill the micro-cracks that persist after this mechanical preparation.

Does the product remain transparent after drying?

Yes, PEEL STOP is a transparent primer with a satin finish. It does not alter the substrate colour and must be covered with a topcoat paint after a minimum of 2 hours drying time.

How long must I wait before applying my topcoat paint?

PEEL STOP is topcoatable after 2 hours at 20°C and 50% relative humidity. The product is touch-dry in 1 hour, but full core cure takes 7 to 10 days.

What is the coverage rate for a 2.5 litre container?

Theoretical coverage lies between 7.4 and 9.8 m² per litre. A 2.5L pot will thus theoretically cover between 18.5 and 24.5 m². Practical coverage depends on substrate porosity and roughness as well as application losses.

Can I use this primer on metallic substrates?

Yes, PEEL STOP is suitable for metallic substrates, particularly galvanised steel, as well as walls and woodwork. Ensure the metallic substrate is clean, dry and degreased before application.
